“I love that UCOM doesn’t just give away food to people who need it. They also offer tools my neighbors can use to really move the needle on their poverty-meter,” says a long-term major donor.
Since our founding in 1985 United Church Outreach Ministry (UCOM) has played a role in solving issues of poverty for thousands of people in Wyoming, Grandville, and Southwest Grand Rapids.
Educational programs including neighbor-led cooking and nutrition classes reinforce our healthy choice food pantry offerings. Walking Club and exercise classes for everyone have added to our neighbors assessment that their health has been improved by their association with UCOM.
Scores of people in our community are part of individual urban and community farming programs (including an educational/support group). This reduces dependence on pantry support for their healthful diets. One of our newest offerings is a well-stocked Farm Stand with locally grown or sourced produce, beans, eggs and honey…at very affordable prices for people with low to moderate income—SNAP, EBT, and Doubleup Bucks too.
Then there is the Healthy Choice Food Pantry with many varieties of good food to see our neighbors through tough times like pandemics and economic disasters and just everyday life. Stop by the website to see how you fit into the puzzle of poverty-solving: UCOMgr.org
